SONY BLU-RAY/DVD PLAYER BDP-S550 1080p, FREE HDMI CABLE

Just a quick review here, I have set up many Blu-ray players for friends, and these are my favorites. They work great, are full featured and have excellent remotes. Firmware updates are also very easy to apply. Unless you really want the backlit remote (not important if you use Harmony remotes like I do) or need the analog outputs you might as well save a bit and buy the BDP-S350. It’s also smaller and a bit more sleek looking. Either choice is excellent, just don’t overbuy if you don’t need to. Firmware support and the interfaces are essentially identical.

Samsung are a common alternative, but they seem to have a less appealing visual interface, more firmware issues (and the process is not as simple) and my biggest beef is that they have an unrefined, noisy mechanism and sluggish responding remote. Either of those final characteristics are either unacceptable or too frustrating to endure in my books.

So I go to Best Buy, take the Blue Ray player to the front, it rings up as 378.99, I said “you have a sticker it says 249.99″ then as i say that my friend is a store manager there walks by and goes hey put that down come with me, takes me to the pioneer section and says, ill get you a display Blu Ray player for 99.99

I bring it home watch about 5 Blu Rays on 240 Hz Samsung, SIMPLY AMAZING, the menu of the BR player is great (same as PS3 if you own one)
Options are great, Ethernet on the back for staying up to date, its just great, I highly recommend it.

I have had this player for several months now. It has worked with every Blu-Ray disc that I have played in it. It does everything that a person could need. It decodes DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD in the player and will output it to a receiver over HDMI or 7.1 analog outputs. It will also bitstream the DTS-HD and TrueHD via HDMI if your receiver will decode them. If your receiver is older, it can output Dolby Digital over the optical/coaxial outputs.

Has BDLive, but that doesn’t interest me. It’s nice to have the option though.

Definitely worth the price to get the onboard decoding of the HD audio formats.

I have owned this blu-ray player for 6 months now and have never had a problem. It has a very neat look, and plays blu-ray as well as DVDs. Some CD formats are not supported, but I don’t use CDs that much. Overall its a great product for a very good price.

I have both the BDP-S350 and BPD-S550. The 550 runs my main TV & audio system, which is why having 7.1 analog channels is important for me. The only other real difference (that can’t be updated/upgraded around) I’ve found between the 2 is that the remote controll on the 550 has a light, and the 350 does not. I’ve owen both players for about 7 months, and load times have improved with some of the recent updates. I have an 120hz Vizio 1080p TV, and the picture is amazing in high def.

As others have noted, the set-up on this product is very easy. I was playing a Blueray disc in about 10 minutes after opening the box. The Blueray image is very good, however, not strickingly better than the upcoded image previously provided via my ONKYO receiver. The Blueray discs load and play smoothly without the long wait associated with some other players. Finally, the player arrived ahead of the forcast date, thus the five star delivery rating.
